Home for the Holidays

Give the gift of comfort and love to a shelter pet by fostering a dog or cat through the holidays! We provide the supplies needed, you provide the love!

At pick up, we will match you with a holiday foster pet to spoil over the Christmas holiday. If you have a particular animal in mind, at pick up let your foster match assistant know who you would like to foster, we will do our best to honor requests. No matches will be made prior to the event due to adoptions constantly changing what pets are currently in the shelter.  All animals over 6 months old are eligible for this event.

Pick up times include:

Friday December 22nd 8AM-4PM

FAQS

Can my dog meet the foster dog before we take them home?

We will do dog to dog introductions by request and only on Friday December 22nd between 8-4. To arrange this, email Dawn@LFAW.org. We DO NOT introduce dogs and cats at the shelter since the shelter is already a heightened emotional environment for pets and cats do not tend to travel well, there is no way to get a true sense of the interactions between a dog and a cat in the shelter environment.

Do I have to keep my holiday foster separate from my pets?

We will do our best to match you up with the best holiday foster fit for your household, however we CANNOT guarantee everyone will get along at all times. It is best to have a plan ready for keeping your foster separate from the resident animals in the home before taking a foster animal home. Please remember that shelter animals are faced with so much stress in their daily life living in the shelter environment, as much as this is a fun event for you and the pets to enjoy, its also a much needed break from the shelter stress and your holiday foster will likely need some time to decompress.

What if I want to adopt my holiday foster?

This is great, we LOVE foster wins! If you decide to make your holiday foster a permanent family member, complete the adoption survey in your take home packet (you will receive at foster pick up) and come to the shelter by the end of day on Tuesday 12/27 to complete adoption paperwork and payment. You do NOT need to bring your holiday foster to this appointment. Please return any crates, carriers, or plastic litterboxes at this time as well.

Can I keep my foster longer?

You will need to return all holiday fosters by Tuesday 12/27. The holidays are a very busy time for walk in traffic at our shelter and if a pet is not here for potential adopters to meet, they miss out on opportunities to find their forever home. Finding loving homes for the homeless cats and dogs in our care is our top priority and we will not jeopardize this during our busiest time for adoptions and shelter visitors. The only exception to this rule is if you are fostering an animal that is being isolated for medical purposes, we encourage fosters taking medical cats or dogs to foster them through their current round of medications when possible, as there is no place better to recover than a loving home.

Can I foster a cat with a dog in the house/Can I foster a dog with a cat already in the house?

We cannot guarantee how well any animals will behave together but we often (NOT ALWAYS) have an idea of how our dogs will do around a cat but there are many unknowns involved and at least two individual animals' personalities at play. The best and safest way to handle this is to plan to keep them totally separate from each other since it is a very short-term foster. If you do choose to introduce cats and dogs you must do this slowly, read both the cat and dog's body language, never allow them to be together without adult human supervision, always allow the cat the ability to get up and away from the dog, do not force interaction, and always have a plan to separate them (completely with a real door, separate space, secured baby gate, etc. a bathroom or laundry room is enough space for a cat!).

What should we do with our holiday foster pet?

This is a great time to love and spoil a foster pet or get to know a cat or dog you are interested in adopting! Awesome activities to do with your holiday foster are leashed walks around the neighborhood, take them to get a pup cup at your favorite coffee shop or dog friendly spot, snuggle up and watch all the holiday movies, take them for a drive to look at Christmas lights, let them help you with last minute present wrapping! Reminder that decompression time is important anytime you take a new animal home, but especially when they live in the stress of shelter life. Your holiday foster will likely be happy to nap by your side while you do your holiday things. This is not the time to introduce them to every extended family member, friend, and neighbor or to take them into stressful and chaotic situations or parties in yours or others homes.

Mary in foster

Sometimes, pets in need of foster are those who aren’t adapting well to the shelter environment and need a bit more normalcy while awaiting adoption. Sometimes it’s a pregnant mother that needs to give birth and wean her babies in the quiet comfort of a home environment. And sometimes a foster candidate is one who needs one-on-one socialization to overcome shyness or to learn to trust humans again.

Current Volunteer Needs

Here are some areas where volunteers are needed:

  • Walk and socialize dogs
  • Socialize cats
  • Assist at off-site adoption events

The stories of how our cats and dogs come to us are as varied as the animals themselves. Individual socialization and training experiences are particular to the needs and challenges of each animal.

It’s a given that animals thrive in the love and care of a forever home. The goal of enrichment is to help get them there.

Everyone Deserves a Home

Sheri Boone adopted her first dog from the League in 1994. Since then, she has been a long-time supporter, adopter and advocate for the League. Sheri is a full-time Comey & Shepherd Realtor® and has created a program that generously benefits the League. When using Sheri to help sell your home, buy a home or refer someone to her, Sheri will make a donation to benefit our animals. Sheri believes that “Everyone Deserves A Home!”  Contact Sheri to find your next home and forever homes for the animals in our shelter!

Planned giving allows you to express your personal values by integrating your charitable, personal and family financial goals to impact a non-profit organization.  Making a planned gift is an excellent way to ensure that your love and compassion for animals continues to benefit orphaned pets for many years to come. With your gift, the League will be able to  fulfill its mission to reduce the number of homeless cats and dogs in Greater Cincinnati by providing a compassionate no-kill animal shelter and programs that promote responsible pet care.

By including the League for Animal Welfare in your gift planning, you have the opportunity to make lasting investment in helping homeless animals in our community. Here are several ways that you can make your planned gift:

Bequests

You can name the League for Animal Welfare as a beneficiary in your will. This ensures that your desire to support the animals is clear. You can donate a set amount or asset, a percentage of the total value of the estate or a residual bequest.

Beneficiary

Some assets, life insurance policies, 401Ks or certificates of deposit allow you to name a beneficiary. If these are no longer required to care for dependents, consider naming the League as the beneficiary.

Appreciated Stock

Gifts of appreciated stock can offer real tax benefits to the giver in the right circumstances, so check with your tax adviser on whether this planned giving option makes sense for you. We’re confident that it will make sense for our animals, now and for years to come! View stock transfer instructions here. We wish to ensure all gifts are properly received and acknowledged so please email us with the name of the stock, the number of shares and your name and address.

The animals, staff, volunteers and Board of Directors of the League for Animal Welfare express our deepest gratitude to donors that honor the shelter with a planned gift. For more information on planned giving, please contact Devon Smith at 513-735-2299.

The League for Animal Welfare’s tax identification number is 31-0818511.

When planning a gift, please contact your tax attorney to help guide you in the legal and tax implications of your decision.

WoofTrax

Walking your dog is great exercise for both you and your pet.  But did you know that you can also earn money for the League with every walk you take?  WoofTrax has a free app called "Walk for a Dog" that maps the distance walked and they will donate based on how many active walkers are logging miles for us. Download the app and you will be prompted to select the animal shelter you want to support.

Then every time you and your pup head out, tap "Start Walking" and you're good to go!

Vehicles for Charity

Wondering what to do with your used car or truck? Donating your old vehicle to the League is convenient, easy, and may qualify you for a tax deduction. And best of all, your donation of a used car or truck will make a big difference in supporting homeless animals in our community. Visit Vehicles for Charity or call 1-866-628-CARS to get started! Your vehicle will be picked up and towed at no charge to you.

Shelter animals also need to be exposed to children – and children need to learn how to behave calmly and gently around animals.  We encourage families to volunteer and to make it a fun and fulfilling family activity.

NOTE: Families can attend the volunteer orientations the League for Animal Welfare. Parents must also handle the dog at all times when children accompany them when dog walking, and they must accompany minors younger than 16 years old when socializing cats, staying in the same cat room with them. This is for the safety and well-being of our animals as well as the child(ren).

If volunteering for court ordered community service hours, you must first check with the Volunteer Manager to see if we have any openings for you to do court ordered community service.  Those court ordered community service volunteer times are scheduled and can involve doing tasks such as washing windows, cleaning crates, cleaning the storeroom, etc., not socializing the animals.  We do not sign for court ordered community service hours for socializing the animals.

Ready to get started?  Simply call 513-735-2299 to sign up for orientation.  We offer sessions on the 2nd Sundays and 4th Saturdays at 8:45 a.m.

Hope 365

What do a latte, a blockbuster film and a homeless animal have in common?  The same money you spend each month on your caffeine fix or a night out at the movies can help save a life.  Just $10 a month - about $0.30 a day - keeps homeless cats and dogs safe in our no-kill shelter while they wait to find a forever home.

We are blessed to have a special group of supporters who are so committed to our mission that they have decided to become monthly donors.  Their recurring donations provide a consistent, reliable stream of income that provides medical care, food and shelter for more than 1,000 homeless cats and dogs annually.

When you support the vital work of the League with an automatic, monthly donation, you'll give hope to these animals, 365 days a year.  Your commitment saves these animals from the life they were dealt, giving them the life they deserve!

Why join the League's Hope 365 giving club?

  • It's convenient!  Direct payment automates your giving so you don't have to remember to write a check or make your gift online.
  • It's economical!  Spread your support over time, making it easy on your budget.
  • It makes a difference!  Even a small gift every month adds up for the animals throughout the year.
  • It's cost-effective!  By reducing our postage and mailing costs, recurring gifts enable the League to spend less on overhead, directing more money to the animals we help.
  • It's flexible!   You can increase, decrease, suspend or opt-out of the program at any time.
  • It's simple!  Set up your monthly donation in less than 5 minutes!
  • And most importantly, IT SAVES LIVES!  Your continued support helps even more homeless animals.

Here are some examples of what your monthly donation can do:

  • Vaccinate every animal in our shelter
  • Provide nutritious food for cats and dogs in our care
  • Ensure every adoptable pet is spayed or neutered before adoption
  • Buy kitty litter for our 15 cat rooms
  • Provide socialization and behavioral training to prepare dogs for their new homes
  • Buy bottle-feeding supplies for abandoned kittens and puppies

When you join Hope 365, you will be recognized in our quarterly newsletter, League Lines, which will encourage others to do the same. Downloadable form available here.

"Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects."  ~Dalai Lama

We know that together, we can make a real difference for homeless animals.  Please consider a monthly gift of $10 or more.

The key to enrichment is the volunteers who come and spend time with the dogs and cats at the League. It is amazing the transformation we see after our volunteers have been visiting and loving our animals. Please consider becoming a volunteer by signing up for a volunteer orientation!

The League’s bottle-feeding program is a unique community outreach that provides help for kittens and puppies who have lost their mother. Created in 2004, this program has helped more than 1,400 animals. The babies that need to be bottle-fed are cared for by trained volunteer families over a period of 6-8 weeks until they are weaned and eligible for adoption. There are no expenses for fostering families - this unique program covers all food and medical expenses for the animals. Learn more about our bottle feeding program.

Our shelter is always in need of supplies. You can help keep our supply shelves stocked by purchasing any item from our wish list and donating it to the League. These donations help ensure that more of our financial resources go directly to the animals in our care.

Items that are always needed:

  • liquid bleach
  • liquid laundry detergent
  • scoopable & non-scoopable kitty litter
  • paper towels
  • trash bags
  • wet cat and dog food (any brand!)
  • gift cards to retailers that carry cleaning supplies or pet products

Other helpful items:

  • sturdy 6-foot leashes
  • Kongs (black XL and XXL preferred)
  • dog collars, especially extra-small, small and medium sizes
  • large Nylabones

Some of these items are on the League's Walmart SparkGood Wish ListAmazon wish list and Chewy wish list.  If you are enrolled in Walmart's "RoundUp" program you can also round your donation up to benefit the League!

Please note that dry cat and dry dog food are not included in our wish list.  The League participates in Hill’s Food, Shelter & Love program, which provides discounts on premium, nutritious Science Diet brand pet food and free samples that go home with every adopted pet.

In-kind donations can be dropped off during our regular hours of operation and will always be put to good use. Our shelter residents thank you for your generosity!

We all have family members, friends and colleagues who share their lives with much-loved pets. Yet no matter how long our four-legged friends may live, we know it never can be long enough. A Memorial Gift to commemorate the loss of a beloved pet is a way to show that you understand and care. You can make a memorial gift here, and your gift will be acknowledged with a note to your friend or family member, telling them of your thoughtfulness.

You can also honor someone special in your life by making a Tribute Gift that extends their love for animals to those four-legged friends who need help the most. Again, the person(s) you choose to honor in this way will receive a card notifying them that a gift to help League animals has been made in their honor, acknowledging their love for all animals. Make a Tribute Gift here.
